This is an 8 week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction training developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD. He is a Professor of Medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he was founding executive director of the Centre for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society. Founder and Director of its world-renown Stress Reduction Clinic.
The course will involve a weekly two and a half hour class with a Day of Mindfulness on a weekend day, usually between weeks 6 and 7. The emphasis in this course is educational. We will have ample time for discussion, and, while the course can be very therapeutic, it is not group therapy. We are learning a different way of being with our experience, bringing attention to what is happening here and now, rather than to what may or may not have happened in the past.
Please wear comfortable clothing, which will not restrict your breathing at the throat, chest or abdomen. You will need a yoga mat, cushion & blanket for lying down Body Scan, this can also be done sitting in a chair if lying down is not comfortable. For sitting meditation you can use a chair or meditation stool or cushion, making sure you are comfortable.
It is advisable to have a pen and paper for some journaling throughout the course. I recommend the book ‘Full Catastrophe Living’ by Jon Kabat Zinn. (I will be referring to this book during the course but It is not essential to buy it, the most important part of the course is the daily practice).
If you need to discuss any aspect of the course or your experience with the home practice please feel free to contact me.
